Bibhutibhushan Bandyapadhyay

First published in 1938

Language: Bengali

Story: Reading the writings of the French writer Julverne, it seems that I do not know how many countries he has traveled. But the reality is, he spends most of his time in a small attic of his own house. But there were thousands of books, magazines and maps of different countries arranged. And in my mind was the intoxication of indomitable adventure. Dipping his face in books and maps, he would travel to different countries of the world in his imagination. Based on his imagination, he wrote other popular adventure stories including the famous Ashidine World Tour. Bengali writer Bibhutibhushan Bandyapadhyay also had an innate passion for nature and an addiction to adventure like Jul. But the villains say that Bibhutibhushan was a housewife. But it was this man who, on the wings of imagination, fled to the dense jungles and mountains of remote Africa. He wrote the novel Chanderpahar full of adventure and excitement with that fictional experience.

In the book, the author tells the story of Shankar, the son of Ajparagaon. Shankar had passed FA (now HSC) and was sitting at home. I can't afford to study more than that. But he was very intelligent and brave. Shankar got a job for the welfare of a relative. However, the job is not in the country, but in the deep jungles of Dhaka and far away Africa. He got the job of laying a new railway line there. He had to spend the night alone in a room next to the station. One day a Portuguese gentleman by the name of Alvarez suddenly appeared there in a very ill condition and handed a map to Shankar. Draw the address of a mountain in the deep forest. Once there, diamond mines can be found. When Alvarez recovered from Shankar's care, Shankar went out with him in search of a diamond mine. Then? An exciting adventure began. Handcuffs of death on the way. At the same time hunger, thirst, fear in the vast desert. All in all a great story.

Interestingly, for those accustomed to reading foreign adventures, the book may seem like a translation or based on a foreign story. Contemplating the reader's skepticism, Bibhutibhushan wrote: ‘The Mountain of the Moon is not a translation of an English novel ... I have used H.P. H. Bibhutibhushan's book for children and teenagers was published in 1935 in the monthly Mouchak edited by Sudhir Chandra Sarkar. The book was first published in 1938. But even after so many days, the appeal of Chanderpahar has not diminished so much.

A version of Chanderpahar has been published from Banglamotor's Biswasahitya Kendra in Dhaka long ago. If you wish, you can collect the book from there. A film based on the story of the book has also been made in Kolkata recently. It is expected to be released in the middle of this month. You can also see the picture after reading the book.
