As the cyclone 'Amphan' is approaching the coast, a catastrophic signal will be issued on Wednesday (May 20) at 8 am, said the state minister for disaster management and relief. Enamur Rahman. He said 20 to 22 lakh people at risk in the coastal areas would be brought to the shelter by tonight (Tuesday).
The state minister made the remarks at an online press conference on the government's preparations for the cyclone Amphan on Tuesday.
The state minister said 12,006 shelters have been set up keeping in view the social distance. It can accommodate 51 lakh 90 thousand 144 people. However, since we are concerned about the Kovid-19 infection, there is a need to maintain social distance, so we have decided to evacuate 20 to 22 lakh people there.
"We brought 1.6 million people to the shelter during Hurricane Fani and 2.2 million people during Bulbul," he said.
Highlighting the latest status of the cyclone, the state minister said, "According to the latest information, the cyclone is 610 km from Chittagong port, 65 km from Cox's Bazar port, 695 km from Mongla seaport and 690 km from Payra seaport." Its maximum wind speed is 245 kilometers per hour, which is why it has been called a super cyclone.
Earlier, the state minister said about the inter-ministerial meeting, other ministries have reviewed their activities.
The health ministry said it had provided emergency medicine to the medical team. The Armed Forces Department said it had instructed the navy to rescue people from inaccessible chars and islands. The Ministry of Public Administration has instructed their officials to stay on the ground.
The Minister of State for Disaster Management said, “We have completed the preparations. Now I'm just sitting in the control room. We are calculating how many people have been evacuated to shelters in which districts. I will brief you about that hour by hour. We hope to be able to bring everyone to the shelter by 8pm. We will wait for the storm with a danger signal by 8 am tomorrow.
