Fazle Hasan Abed was born on 26 April 1936 in the village of Baniachang in Habiganj district of Bangladesh. He passed Matriculation from Pabna Zilla School and Higher Secondary Examination from Dhaka College. He then enrolled in Naval Architecture at the University of Glasgow, UK. Excluding that, he was admitted to the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants in London. He completed his professional course in 1982.
After completing his education, he returned to the country and joined the Fazle Hasan Abed Shell Oil Company, where he was quickly promoted to head the finance department. While working for the Shell Oil Company, a catastrophic cyclone hit the coast of Bangladesh in November 1970. During this time he formed an organization called 'Help' with his friends and stood by the people of the cyclone-hit Monpura Island. There they conducted extensive relief and rehabilitation activities.
When the war of independence of Bangladesh started in 1971, Fazle Hasan Abed moved to England. There he devoted himself to gaining support for Bangladesh's war of independence in various European countries, raising funds and forming public opinion.
In December 1971, Fazle Hasan Abed returned to newly independent war-torn Bangladesh. At this time he sold his flat in London and started the relief work with that money. He started working in Shalla area, a remote area of Sunamganj which was reduced to rubble during the war of liberation. He formed BRAC as a continuation of these activities. His long journey began with various long-term programs to improve the living standards of the rural poor. He conducts his programs with the aim of enabling the poor to improve their skills and become self-reliant.
Within four decades, he expanded his activities through his unprecedented leadership. BRAC became the world's largest private development agency.
At present, millions of BRAC workers in 12 countries around the world are working tirelessly to improve the lives of about 13 crore people. Fazle Hasan Abed's able leadership has made this unique achievement of BRAC possible by standing against innumerable adversities.
In fact, the founder's dreamy foresight, indomitable courage and dynamism have served as BRAC's constant inspiration for progress, new audits and expansion. As a result, he has received numerous awards and recognitions at home and abroad.
National and international awards
Fazle Hasan Abed has been awarded numerous prizes nationally and internationally in recognition of his unique general contribution to the social field. Fazle Hassan Abed was awarded the 'Thomas Francis Jr. Medal of Global Public Health' in 2016 for his special contribution to global public health and for his work in protecting the health of the world's poor. In 2015, he received the 'World Food Prize' in recognition of his contribution to food and agriculture. In 2013, he received the Open Society Prize from Hungary's Central European University (CEU). In 2011, he won the world's highest award in the field of education, the Wise Prize, introduced by the Qatar Foundation. In 2010, he received the Knighthood, one of the UK's most prestigious titles, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to poverty alleviation.
He has also received the David Rockefeller Bridging Leadership Award (2006), the Clinton Global Citizenship Award (2006), the Henry R. Cravis Prize in Leadership (2007), and the Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation for Contribution to Poverty Alleviation and Social Development. , Gates Award for Global Health (2004), UNDP Mahbubul Haque Award for Outstanding Contribution to Human Development (2004), Gleetsman Foundation Award (2003), The Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneurship Award (2002), Wolfe Palm (2001) Award (1992), Alanson Feinstein World Hunger Award (1990), UNESCO Noma Award (1985) and Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership (1980).
BRAC has won the Conrad Ann Hilton Humanitarian Award (2006), the world's largest award for humanitarian contribution, and Bangladesh's highest state award, the Swadhinata Puraskar (2006).

Ashoka Fazle Hasan Abed has been recognized as one of the 'Global Great'. He is a founding member of the Global Academy for Social Entrepreneurship. In 2010, UN Director-General Ban Ki-moon appointed Fazle Hassan Abed as one of the world's "least respected individuals" in the world.
