Review of one of my favourite movie named "THE RAINMAKER"
Me being law student these types of movies draw my attention more than the typical love stories and on the other hand this movie has a power to show a student with books in his hand to show what a real world is going to be on the professional level and also the reality or I must say the gap between the law school and the real world.
In the movie main character who is one of my favourite actors named Matt Damon, he is playing the role of lawyer named as Rudy Baylor. He got his motivation to perusing his career in law by reading about civil right lawyers of 1960’s he found it very fascinating how the lawyers of 60’s use the knowledge of law to do some impossible things. And at that time they also gave lawyers a good name and fame in the society. Rudy Baylor is a man of dignity and self respect the one who doesn’t run behind the money blindly and give priority to justice, these things may not give him good money but as I have mentioned above he gets his satisfaction in true justice he lives with his ethics. During his law school days he was not the son of some rich parent, so he used to do some part time job in the bar to earn money for his tuition fee. The movie has not been lagged behind in showing the reality and truth behind the situation of law students after when they graduates. Some students just after completing the three tear course get the job in their father’s law firm which shows that in the field of law early money is mostly due to the connection which you already have. When after graduation he didn’t got the job and the law firms were something he was not interested in as he was willing to use his knowledge of law for not only making ton of money but also to bring some changes in the society, so he went for practice (litigation lawyer) and during practice time he experienced that the education of a law school is way more different than the what a real world has to teach you i would like to quote a dialogue on this form the same movie that is “in law school they don’t teach you what you need to know. It’s all theories lofty notions and big fat ethics book.” He was dealing with a case in which he was involved emotionally with a girl, it is said to be the weakness of a lawyer when he gets involved with a client emotionally “lawyers are not supposed to involve with the client personally but there are all kinds of lawyers and all kinds of client too”. For the first time when he entered into the court before the judge he was still not the licensed lawyer, although, at that time he passed the exam of bar council but process of oath has not been taken place yet. There he experienced something which all the lawyer in his life time must have faced he said in his mind that “I memorised the black files of cases and laws, I read all the books on jurisprudence, the rules of evidence and discovery, but I took one look around the court room and I knew that I haven’t even been born yet”. He was working on a case in which there was family who has ka kid who was real sick and was on the death bed the case was related to insurance company that is named as “great benefit” who was to give the money for the treatment of the boy because they were legally obligated to do so as mentioned in the terms of insurance. This type of agreement is called retention agreement in which the contract has been signed for the compensation, in which plaintiff is required to fulfil the terms to give the money required for the treatment. Judy won the case leaving the insurance company in total bankruptcy, all the money was given to the beneficiaries of the contract, the main character of the movie who always played by the books and was a man with principles and ethics won the huge case but did not make the money out of it even though he got the chance to cash in a loads of money. This ending in my opinion is dark side of the truth where if a person is always playing by the books and putting the ethics and good of the people before his own is always going to end up with being not so reach with his/her peer group.
