Where Is The Grand Canyon Located
Located in the northern portion of the state of Arizona in the United States. The Grand Canyon in 1918 was designated as protected as a U.S National Park. This was done to protect it and help preserve it for future generations. Literally one of the best things the U.S did was create National Parks.
What To Expect
So how big is the Grand Canyon? If you want to look at it in river miles, since the Grand Canyon River dose run through it, then it is 277 miles or 446 km long. As for how big it is then it is estimated to be 1,218,375.54 acres or 1,904 square miles/4,931 square km. The rocks that make of the canyon is dated to around 200 million years old, but the canyon was created by the river and erosion over 5 to 6 million years old.
Visiting the South Rim, then check out the train from Williams city that will take you to the Grand Canyon rim and back. This is also the area you would go for hiking into the canyon, which needs permits and lots of preparation. It took me a full day to hike back up when camping a w few years ago.
The North Rim is not as touristy since there is no public transportation to this area. During winter, heavy snow will close this section off. Always be cautious since there are no rails present around most of the rim.
How Many People Have Fallen
Sadly, each year the news station reports at least a few of people, mostly tourist, who have tragically fallen to their deaths. The average is around 12 deaths per year that happen at the Grand Canyon and from those, a few will have subject to drama from a fall, about 2 to 3 per year. So what about the other 9 or 10? Well these are usually due to natural causes, overheating, suicide, medical issues, and traffic related.
It just takes one misstep and it can be easy to go over the edge. When you see how deep and big it is, you can understand why so many dare to get so close to the edges, knowing most areas do not have a guard rail. Since the establishment of the Grand Canyon over 200 years ago, there have been a reported 64 deaths linked somehow to the canyon.
Most Popular Areas
The Grand Canyon is over 2,757 miles long along the rim portion. It would be impossible to put a rail up on every section of the canyon.
The south rim is popular for being open all year round, but dose not have all of the best views. Even with rails, people have been known to fall. Mostly it is due to people either trying to get that perfect picture or just not paying attention to the loose dirt on the edge.
Another popular spot is Horeshoe Bend, which is located closed to Page, Arizona and the Antelope Canyons. This place is famous for the sunset pics of the horseshoe river that has carved the canyon below. Without any rails present, this spot is known to have at least 1 person per year who dose not heed the warnings and ends up falling.
Happy travels and keep exploring the world!
I have never had the opportunity to travel to these places but I have a lot of desire to travel all over the world...
