From a former super host, I think I can say I have a good grasp on how the platform works, what the guest expects and especially what the host wants.
Do not try to book a place to request one if you have no picture up. A picture of a cat also does not count, even if it is cute.
Wondering why I am saying this, well any host will fell more comfortable with you as well as feel you are more of a trustworthy guest if you represent yourself correctly. Why hide yourself and not put a picture up? I've automatically decline any booking request if there was no clear picture of the guest.
If you need to send a booking request, then you better make sure your first message is informative and respectful. The more info the better. No, the host dose not need to know everything, but a rough estimate on time and why you are there makes a big difference. Do not expect to get the bookings if you are rude or lack the proper info.
Another perk the letting the host know maybe why you are in the area of for how long is they are locals, who know where to eat and what to do. Why pass up this chance of a free tour guide at your tips. I loved to help people find places to see or eat.
Checking in at a certain time, then make sure you do or communicate if you can't make it. Most host will work with you on check in, while some are very strict. Pick wisely.
Do not ask to pay offsite! This is for your protection and for the host as well. Going through the app gives you an insurance protection if something happens.
Also, do not ask for a discount unless you are planning on doing an extended stay. Of the amount you pay, the host only gets a certain amount. From this amount, they also have to pay to clean, replace things, and supply basics like electricity. So, when you are asking for less, it is not Airbnb you are getting a deal from really, it is the host that is giving you that deal and might be losing out on income.
Planning on bringing extra people, then make sure to tell the host beforehand or pay for them. Do not show up with 7 people for a 2 person booking. It is just plan rude.
Lastly, make sure to check the reviews and info of the host you plan to book from. Make sure their accommodations will fit your needs. You do not want to have a situation come up while you are staying somewhere or beforehand.
