The origin of the name ‘pu’ from the word paundrik. It means sugarcane or sugar. Halae Pu is the oldest town in Bangladesh. Bogra, Rajshahi, Rangpur and Dinajpur districts formed the center of the Pundra district. The capital of the ancient Pund kingdom was Pundravardhana or Pundranagar.

The independence of the ancient kingdom of Pundu was abolished during the reign of Emperor Ashek. Current location is Mahasthangarh in Bogra district. This nation is mentioned in Vedic literature and Mahabharata. The Pala kings considered North Bengal as their homeland. That is why it was named Barindri. The origin of the word Barindra is from this Barindri. The area rich in red soil on the west bank of the present Karateya river is known as Barind land. The area between the west of the Ganges and the Karateya rivers is referred to as the Barindrimandal in the Ramayana.
