Greater Dhaka, Mymensingh, Comilla, Barisal, Pabna, Faridpur, Nayakhali, Bakerganj and Patuakhali's lower wetlands and the western highlands of Yasher, Kushtia, Nadia, Shantipur and adjoining Bikrampur of Dhaka belonged to Banga Janapada. During the Pathan period the whole of Bengal was united under the name of Banga. The old inscriptions mention two parts called 'Bikrampur' and 'Navya'. Ancient Bengal was a strong kingdom. The name 'Banga' is mentioned in 'Aitareya Aranyaka'. Besides, the name 'Banga' is mentioned in Ramayana, Mahabharata and Kalidasa's 'Raghubangsa'.
