According to the company, cybercriminals could only view Microsoft's source code, but not make changes to it.

Russian-linked hackers were able to gain access to the internal systems of Microsoft Corp. and view the internal source code. The Wall Street Journal reported .

Microsoft has reportedly confirmed that it downloaded software from its vendor SolarWinds and that it was infected with malicious code. Thus, cybercriminals gained access to Microsoft's internal networks.

"We found unusual activity on some internal accounts and, after checking, found that one account was used to view source code in multiple repositories," the corporation said.

The company said that hackers could only view the code, but not edit. It is not reported which products were attacked.

Earlier it was reported that Microsoft in recent months has recorded several hacker attacks from state-related groups in Russia and the DPRK on pharmaceutical companies.

Also, the US Department of Justice accused the Russian Federation of a cyberattack on the government network.
