Vadim Tarasov, director of the Institute for Translational Medicine and Biotechnology, told Sputnik that clinical trials of the world’s first coronavirus vaccine on volunteers at Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University have been successfully completed and that the first volunteer group would be discharged on Wednesday and the second on July 20.
The university began clinical testing of vaccines produced by the Gamalei Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Russia on June 18.
“The University of Sechenov has successfully completed tests on volunteers of the world’s first vaccine against coronavirus,” Tarasov said.
According to Alexander Lukashev, director of the Institute of Medical Parasitology, Tropical and Vector-Borne Diseases s at Sekkenov University, the goal of the research phase was to show the human health safety of the vaccine, which was successfully accomplished.
“The safety of the vaccine is confirmed. It corresponds to the safety of those vaccines that are currently on the market,” Lukashev said in Sputnik.
The plan to develop additional vaccines is already being determined by the developer’s strategy, including the complexity of the epidemiological situation caused by the virus and the possibility of expanding the production scale, Lukashev added.
“In the midst of a pandemic, Sekkenov University has not only served as an educational institution but also as a science and technology research center that can participate in making important and complex products such as drugs…..With the vaccine, we have started pre-clinical research and protocol development, and clinical trials are currently underway,” Tarasov noted.
