Since from the start, I've always watched movie from a different perspective as a viewer. Usually, viewers go for emotional attachment, action sequences, story development and other aspects. I agree that these aspects matter a lot to make a good movie but there is always a "hidden message" behind the main story that keeps the movie captivating. If viewer starts looking for that message and go through the movie once again, I'm sure that it would come out as more fine and well-built finished product than before. So, I always look the specific scene or the dialogue that will portray the main message to audience. My views about the movies will be a little different from others. I hope you guys will agree to my perspective :')
Movie Background
The movie “JoJo Rabbit” released in 2019, was directed by Taika Waititi. It revolves around a boy who is going through a confusing phase as he was being raised in a manipulative society by the German troops in world war II. It's a semi-realistic movie like it's in the real and past tragic timeline but the scenario seems kind of unrealistic. The movie depicts the struggle of the boy who is trying to figure out what’s good and what’s bad while dealing with life’s hardships at the same time. Finding the answers to the questions that were circulating in his head, is the main premise of the movie.
The movie includes a diverse cast including Taika Waititi (as Adolf Hitler), Roman Griffin Davis (as JoJo), Scarlett Johansson (as JoJo's mother), Thomasin McKenzie (as Elsa Knorr) and many more. With this talented packed cast, the movie writing really justified each and every role and their places in the timeline.
The Perspective
The movie was portrayed from the JoJo's perspective. It is mainly built his perspective as the movie goes forward. I don't think there is any bias in the portrayal of the movie as the movie comes to an end from a neutral point of view as a whole. Some characters were portraying biased roles but it was necessary to capture the essence of those characters. To me, the whole movie was revolving around the accurate events of world war II and that was straight to the point instead of depicted in some other way. I think that movie could be portrayed by the Jewish girl's perspective as it would give a whole new side to the story. It would show the main point that how she ended up in the JoJo's house and what was she going through while being locked in the wall of the house.
The JoJo's character building with respect to other casting is beautifully done. Although at some moments, it feels like a little dragged but it was necessary to let the story breath for a moment. My favorite character interaction is JoJo talking casually to Yorki, who is my favorite character from the movie btw.
The hidden Message
The whole movie speaks out the message that the director wanted to convey. It showed the fact that you have to go with the flow when it comes to life. Happiness and hardships are meant to be in the way but the important thing is not to stop. You have to carry yourself and come out as strong in the end as they say “Life is not a bed of roses”. And I think the purpose of this movie is to convey a simple point that is not everyone carries the same emotions as others. There can be some people that still prefer humanity over any other agenda. There can be some good on the evil side and the same goes for the other way around. It’s on you that how will you take it.
My thoughts
In my opinion, the light-hearted comedy with this serious topic worked in the favor of the movie. It wasn't too much, just enough to carry some laughter. At some points, the movie felt a little bit dragged and slow-paced that could be fixed especially at the start. However, it took a swift turn as the story progressed. The character's emotional building with the story stood out to me. It set the emotion with every scene whether it's comedic or heart-felt sad.
I recommend you all to definitely check it out and share your thoughts.
ohh it's a comedy of sorts. maybe I'll try giving it a bit of a watch (trailer) later on and see if I'll like it
