A day without mobile phone

We have become a society that is totally dependent on communication devices to make our world go round. We have the technology today that allows us to keep in almost constant contact with one another. We communicate through cell phones. The phone, TV, personal computer, and Internet have found revolutionary ways to connect people, entertain them and empower them. But nothing has matched the seismic cultural shift created by the cell phone, with its ability to connect and deliver content virtually anywhere, anytime. Although most of us have grown familiar with cell phones during the past 10 years, we often don’t realize how much our world has been transformed by the little device in our pockets and purses.

The cell phone has completely changed the way our world lives and is no longer a novelty. Rather, it is a necessity for today’s fast-paced lifestyles.
And so, about a week ago I wondered to myself, “what would one day be like without my cell phone?” Therefore, I decided to challenge myself to not use my cell phone at all one Sunday.

The morning of that Sunday started off pretty rough considering I had to wake up to a traditional alarm clock blaring into my ears instead of melodious alarm. After I got out of bed and saw none of my roommates were home. I wondered where they were and naturally reached for my cellphone to text them. “Oh no!” I thought to myself. This is when I began to get frustrated.
I thought it would be a good idea to go for a run outside. Since I use my phone for music, I had to run without listening to songs. I felt like I had no motivation to pace myself. Consequently, I cut my run short. The rest of the afternoon consisted mainly of homework. While I was doing my homework I kept on thinking what were the things I was missing on Facebook & Instagram or important things my friends would send in texts. I suddenly realized I had to go for watching a film. Before leaving home, I had to write down my mom’s phone number on a piece of paper so I could call her from PCO when I was ready to be picked up.
I called her from the PCO to let her know that I was ready to be picked up in front of the Theatre and she replied, “okay I’ll be there in five min!” Ten more minutes passed, “where is she,” I wondered to myself. This would be a typical situation where I would have my cell phone at hand to call her. Fifteen minutes later she showed up and took me home. The rest of the night I found it difficult not to call or text my friends. I finished the night off watching some T.V. and finishing last-minute homework.
I enjoyed this experiment of enabling me to use resources other than my cell phone and to live simpler for a day.
But most importantly, it opened my eyes to see how dependent our society truly is on cell phones.
