Leofinance - Self-Promotion On Threads, Where Do You Draw The Line?

Life On Hive

The introduction of Threads was a highly anticipated event and for good reason. If Leofinance hadn’t of jumped on this idea, another community would have had to! This is an integral aspect of life on Hive. With so many unique and varied communities, we all need a “home base” where we can share ideas, and experience interaction between various communities. In a similar way that interoperability enables “communication” between different blockchains, Threads serves as a tool to “thread” Hive communities together.

Threads, therefore, simultaneously acts as a means for communities and Hivers to gain exposure, and subsequently, recognition. However, with every great idea, or opportunity comes “abuse”. Being a decentralized, censorship-resistant platform means there are no rules. However, the behavior and response of an entire community can be equally as “effective” as rules… and this is perhaps what some users need to consider.

The practice of constant self-promotion is in fact more harmful than beneficial. Essentially, this is spam, and spam always manages to trigger contempt. At the end of the day, those misusing Threads are essentially isolating themselves, which is in fact the opposite of what they are actually trying to accomplish. It’s rather ironic and reveals just how counterintuitive excessive self-promotion can be.

So, What Constitutes Healthy Self-Promotion?

This will most likely vary from person to person, so is perhaps a little difficult to gauge. However, there is also likely to be a level that most would consider excessive, and it’s that level that we need to try and identify. Personally, I like to keep my “levels” as healthy as possible. Threads that are directly linked to my writings make up approximately 5% of my content on Threads.

I consider an extension beyond 10% to be on the verge of overextension. Some would perhaps be quite happy with such a ratio, as it is still relatively modest. However, I firmly believe that by keeping this ratio relatively low, the integrity of the platform is maintained. There is nothing worse than scrolling through a sea of posts in search of something that extends beyond “look at me”.

I guess we all have our own unique idea of what Threads should be, and how it should be utilized. However, if the majority of timelines are simply made up of links to everyone’s latest Leofinance post, or any other community for that matter, the objective is lost, in my opinion. If the majority of users keep this down to at least 10%, I believe there will be a healthy flow of content that is still stimulating and engaging.

When a feed takes on a single agenda, users switch off, and simultaneously, disengage. From what I perceive and believe, the primary objective of Threads is engagement. This is also clearly evident by the incorporation of polls… they encourage and promote engagement and participation. Coming across an extended patch of self-promoting posts will cause many users to zone out.

Fortunately, the ratio is relatively good at this stage. However, a few users who primarily engage in this type of behavior have managed to gain the attention of some of the “guardians” of the chain. I think that addressing this type of behavior early on is a proactive way of ensuring that, we as a community, maintain a certain standard and viewpoint in regard to “spammy” behavior.

Final Thoughts

I might sound a little too mathematical and “specific” in regard to ratios. That is just me. However, what I am really trying to impart is a level of conscientiousness. If we remain conscious, in regard to not extending self-promotion beyond healthy limits, we maintain the integrity and quality of the content flowing via Threads. It’s not about restrictions, but rather making the most out of, and preserving a great application. See you next time!
