Sobre si Dios lo puede todo/About whether God can do everything

Throughout our existence as a species, humanity has always been strongly attracted to big questions whose answers may end up determining the most essential understanding of reality itself.

One such question that has been the source of particularly great debate is the question of whether God exists. But this issue can easily branch out to many others that can be very interesting. For example: the question of whether God can really do everything, that is, his omnipotence.

In this article I would like to address a special point about the possibility of omnipotence. Of course, I do not claim to resolve this problem definitively. Instead, I intend to give an introduction to it.

Now, the importance of God's omnipotence in the matter of proving or disproving his existence lies in the fact that it is one of his fundamental characteristics that make him what he is. Therefore, if it were demonstrated that God's omnipotence is not possible, the same would be true of his own existence.

Taking the above into account, many objections have been raised about the omnipotence of God. The one that perhaps stands out as the best known is the question of the type: "Can God, a being who can do everything, create a rock so heavy that even he cannot lift it?

The problem with the question is when we try to answer it with a "yes" or a "no", because:

  • In case God can indeed create a rock object that he cannot lift, by not being able to lift it he will be presenting an incapacity. That incapacity shows that he cannot do everything. Therefore, if God cannot do everything, he is not omnipotent, so he is not really God either.

  • In case God cannot create a rock that he cannot lift, he will clearly be presenting an incapacity. In this case he could not be omnipotent either.

What the question has done is to lead us to two possible answers that both make God's omnipotence seem impossible. And since it is a necessary characteristic of God to be able to do everything, then the fact that omnipotence is impossible also makes his existence impossible.

Thus the initial question directs us to an argument that goes against the existence of God. There are many other ways to formulate the question, it does not need to be just a rock, it can even be something like: "Can God create a song so sad that even he cannot help crying? Even if it sounds ridiculous and childish (it is), it will also lead us to the same contradiction.

There is, however, a possible answer to this contradiction. For some thousands of years now, St. Augustine (and the tradition of theistic thought in general) has warned that the question starts from an error and that the argument from which it follows has no validity.

In particular, St. Thomas Aquinas can point out to us that what is being asked of God in the question is not congruent and does not correctly understand what omnipotence is. Aquinas says that the ability to do everything really encompasses only what is logically possible, but not those things that are contradictory or do not make logical sense.

Therefore, a question of the type "Can God make an object so heavy that he himself cannot lift it?" hides a contradiction because God is expected, on the basis of his all-pervading power, to make something that surpasses it. It makes no sense at all.

It is similar to asking him to draw us a "square circle", because both objects are contradictory, a circle cannot be square at the same time. We cannot ask God for that, because it is an object that cannot exist, in fact we cannot even imagine it. It is not logically possible.

On the basis of that argument we can find an interesting possible answer to the previous problem. However, as I already mentioned, this article only intends to make a small presentation of the subject and, if possible, something interesting to think about. In fact, many other problems and debates about God have been going on for hundreds of years by great geniuses and still do not end. There is still much more to learn and fascinate us.
