In my last article where we discussed all we need to know about the government's activities in the political higgy-hagga with respect to Britain of which I believe someone was helped to know how all the British political establishment came to be till now.
In addtion to all that, today, i shall be starting up from where i had left off for an easy understanding if really you had followed the article from the day one of it being published right here on read.cash.
...the reluctance of the Navy to realise the importance of the submarine and the slowness of the in which the Army adopted the idea of the armoured tank are illustrations as regards the world war that broke out between 1939-1945 had a profound effect both on the Armed Forces themselves and on the attitude of the entire nation towards them and in this connection, four points may be noticed.
First, conscription was introduced even before the outbreak of the war and public opinion has become much less opposed to the idea of conscription as a permanent measure.
Second, there has been a marked in the pay and condition of all the men in Forces.
Meanwhile, the war has given many citizens some personal experiences of what had previously been the unvoiced or unregarded grievances of the regular service-man, and the consequent demand could not be ignored anymore.
At that same time, the mechanism of warefare requires an increased degree of skills from the fighting men and this must be reflected in his pay.
Third, the method for selecting commissioned officers was radically changed so that more better hands and less political connections towards the assuptions of such hefty and key positions of authority was limited and infact, removed so as to enable capable hands handle issues respecting the military and all its fighting men.
Before the 1939 war outbreak, officers were in the main, drawn from one social class and other ranks from another whilst promotions from the ranks did occur but not frequently.
Service in the ranks has now been made a neccessary preliminary to appointment as an officer, and it is open to any man to apply for a commission.
The tests applied to the applicants are rigorous and were designed to discover military efficiency, general intelligence and moral and temperamental fitness for command.
In the interest of democracy and efficiency alike, it was desirable to open career to talent in the Armed Forces and this I will tell you, is the main aim of present policy and its full achievements depends greatly as in the Civil Service, on improvement in the country's educational system.
Fourtly and lastly before we call it a day for today is that the war raised again the problem of co-operation between the services.
In 1946, the solution adopted to solving that issue regarding the co-operation amongst the service-men was that of a creation of a Defence Committee which was rightly placed under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister.
Its membership is not rigidly defined, but some of the senior Cabinet Ministers, the Minister of Supply and the heads of the Service Departments will be regular members.
At that same time, there was the establishment of the position of the Ministry of Defence, which has to divide the available men and materials between the Navy, the Army, and the Air Force, and to supervise research, production of armaments and such administrative matters as are common to all the three services.
The Minister sits in the Cabinet from which the heads of the Service Departments will usually be excluded.
