A little boy named Ripon lives in a make-shift hut in our locality. He is about twelve years old. He collects polythene bags, scrap paper and other materials from our area and so we call him 'tokai'. He sells the collected materials at a shop for taka 5 to 10 a bag. He starts his work early in the morning. He takes a big bag at his back and roams here and there to collect different things which are scattered around us. He also collects wastage from different dust bins. Plastic bottles, cans, tin, iron whatever little valuable things he gets around us, he takes them in his bag. He collects them all the day. By selling them, he gets 100 to 120 taka. He likes his job because there is no alternative work for him. Once he got diarrhoea and had to stay at home for few days. He could not afford to go to a doctor or buy medicine for himself. The whole area than looked like a dustbin. Ripon also thinks that his job is not small. But his job is not suitable for a boy like Ripon. He should be at school. He also wants to read. But it is his extreme poverty that makes him do such jobs. We should do something for him.
