Nickel was first used (as an alloy of iron and nickel obtained from meteorites) in 3500 BC.

In 1851, Swedish scientist Axel Friedrich Kronstadt first identified nickel as a chemical element. He found nickel in a cobalt mine in Los, Gavelberg County, Sweden. Although he initially mistaken it as an ore of copper.

The element is named after Nickel (similar to the ancient Nick), an evil spirit in German mineral mythology.
