Heart murmurs: How do they occur and what are the ways to treat them?

You may feel a little tingling in your heart from time to time. Is this a normal feeling, or an indication of the occurrence of a specific disease, find out the answer in this article.

Heart murmurs?

Heart murmurs are defined as a feeling of mild pain that lasts for a short time, and in this case the heart rhythm is abnormal, either it beats quickly, slowly, or in an irregular manner, and this is called an arrhythmia.

Inside the heart there is a complex system of valves and nodes that control how and when blood is pumped, but if the functions of this vital system are disrupted or damaged, your heart rate can change.

When this disorder occurs, you start to feel discomfort, pain or hit your chest for a short time, but it does not cause life-threatening or health complications.

Causes of heart murmurs

The most common causes of abnormal heart rhythms or heartbeats are the following:

1- Tachycardia

Tachycardia means that your heart is beating too fast, as a normal heart beats 60 - 100 times per minute in adults.

If you have this disorder, your heart rate increases by more than 100 beats per minute, and there are three subtypes of tachycardia:

  • Supraventricular tachycardia in the upper part of the heart known as the atrium.

  • Ventricular tachycardia in the lower part of the heart known as the ventricles.

  • Sinus tachycardia, where a normal increase in your heart rate occurs during illness, for example when you are sick, but your heartbeat returns to normal once it improves.

2- Atrial fibrillation

This irregular heart rhythm occurs in the upper parts of the heart and is one of the most common arrhythmias.

Atrial fibrillation, when many unstable electrical impulses malfunction, causes the atria to quiver and lose control.

It can raise the heart rate to 100 - 200 beats per minute, which is much faster than the normal rate per minute.

3- Bradycardia

If you have bradycardia, this means your heart rate is less than 60 beats per minute. In general, bradycardia occurs when the electrical signals traveling from the atria to the ventricles are disrupted.

Some athletes may have a slow heart rate because they are in excellent physical condition, and this is not usually caused by a heart problem.

4- Ventricular fibrillation

This type of abnormal rhythm can stop the heart from beating and cause cardiac arrest. It occurs in the ventricles, where the blood becomes unable to pump blood from your heart to the body and brain, causing heart murmurs.

Ventricular fibrillation is a serious condition that can be fatal if not treated promptly.

5- Coronary heart disease

This serious heart problem occurs when cholesterol and other deposits block the coronary arteries.

Other causes cause heart murmurs

There are other causes and practices that may lead to feelings of tingly heart, including:

  • Medicines that may cause some changes in the heart rate, including:

  • Caffeine, such as amphetamine, which are brain-stimulating drugs.

  • Beta blockers that are used to reduce high blood pressure.

  • Changes in your heart muscle after an illness or injury.

  • Healing after heart surgery.

  • Low potassium and other electrolytes.

  • Heart abnormalities.

Prevention and treatment of heart attacks

Although the feeling of heart twitches cannot be very dangerous, many heart rhythm disorders can be controlled with treatment, and it is preferable that your doctor monitor your condition with regular checkups.

Overall, healthy lifestyle choices can have an important role in helping you manage this health condition, and your doctor will likely recommend that you improve your diet, exercise more, and try to end other dangerous behaviors such as; Smoking.
