According to Bukhari and Muslim, there is a verse in Surah Shu'ara which means - Warn your relatives [about the Hereafter]. After the revelation of the verse, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) ascended the mountain of Safa in Makkah, gathered his relatives and warned them of the torment of the Hereafter. On hearing this, Abu Lahab waved his hand arrogantly and said, "May you be destroyed." Did you bring us together for this? In the light of this incident, Surah Lahab was revealed. Abu Lahab had a wife who used to bring thorns and dry wood and spread them on the path of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) so that he would stumble and fall on the wood and suffer. In this Surah the miserable consequences of both husband and wife have been described.
Consequences of Abu Lahab-
Seven days after the battle of Badr, a poisonous boil appeared on his body. Family members dumped him in a secluded place for fear of infecting others. He died there in a state of utter despair. The body remains like this for three days. Eventually an Ethiopian laborer was called. He dug a hole and pushed it with a stick, threw the body into the hole and pressed the stone on top. This is the state of humiliation and destruction in this world and there is punishment in the Hereafter. That punishment is many times more than the punishment of the world.
Consequences of Abu Lahab's wife-
Abu Lahab's wife's name was Umm Jamil. He was so bad that he used to bring thorns and dry wood and spread it in the way of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) so that he would stumble and fall on the wood and suffer from thorns. The Qur'an says that she will be with her husband in Hell just as she has been with her husband in this world for contradicting the truth and torturing the Prophet. According to some commentators, in the Hereafter she will go around collecting the bitter and thorny bushes of Hell, the wood of ‘Yakkum’ and ‘Dari’ and thereby intensify her husband’s torment.
The commentators wrote that the woman had a very precious necklace around her neck. He would say, ‘I swear to God! I will spend the necklace against Muhammad. 'So even in hell he will have a necklace around his neck. Surprisingly, that is how the unfortunate woman died. Umm Jamil used to tie her wooden knot with a strong rope. One day he was resting on a rock with a wooden stick tied in his head. At that moment, an angel appeared and knocked down his stick. As a result, it got stuck in his throat and he died in that condition.
