How was the world created? The Garo tribes believed that water and water were all around in the beginning. No ground sign anywhere. Everything is dark.
Seeing such a situation, Lord Tatara Rabuga expressed his desire to create the world. He sent Nast Nupast in the shape of a woman. With some sand.
Nasta Nupasta first took refuge in a spider's web and spread it over all the water.
Then he grabbed the sand he had brought with him and threw it into the water, saying, "Bring the soil from under the eternal water."
In due time the soil came and Nasta Nupast created the earth with that soil. In Garo language it is called 'Main Pilti'.
After the creation of the world, it seemed wet to Lord Tatara Rabugar. So he placed the son and daughter of Asima Dingasima on earth to dry it. These are the Sun (Rangara Balsa) and the Moon (Bir Jitje). So the moon and the sun are brothers and sisters to the Garos.
Why does the moon give less light? The moon was very beautiful. Brother was much brighter than the sun. This created monomalinya among them. Surya was jealous of her sister's beauty. The two siblings quarrel all the time. Their mother used to stop it.
One day my mother left them at home and went out for emergency work. At that opportunity, a heated argument broke out between the brothers and sisters. He took the form of a fight. The sun gets angry. With a handful of mud, he smeared it on his sister Chandra's face. The sister also got angry. Brother Surya must be punished. So don't wash your face and wait for your mother.
As soon as the mother came home, Chandra showed her muddy face and told about her brother's misdeeds. Mother is not happy about this. On the contrary, the girl got angry at Chandra's vindictive behavior and cursed Chandra and said, "May your face remain muddy forever." The Garo tribes believe that since then the moon has received less light than the sun.
How did Machang come home? That was a long time ago. A Garo woman gave birth to twin sons. Excessive feelings of two brothers. When they grow up, they are infinitely brave. People used to call them heroes. Once one of the brothers set out for the conquest of the East. Before leaving, he gave the other brother the responsibility of protecting the village and the group.
The brother obeyed his brother word for word. Besides, he also works to protect the group by performing various rituals. It's been a long time. Everyone is counting the hours until the brother returns safely.
The brother in the village never slept long on the ground. As his faith is twin, if dust gets on his body and head, his other brother will also be harmed. So he would sleep reclining with something while standing.
The mother cries when she sees her son suffering. He built a machang house for the boy so that he could sleep comfortably avoiding the contact of dust. It was the first Machang house in Garo tribal society. At that time, the people of the society used to respectfully call her 'Changma', meaning the mother of the Machang house. Over time the Changma address was transformed into Sangma. Later the descendants of that mother became known as 'Sangma'.
