At least 40 Taliban militants have been killed in an airstrike by Afghan forces in the northeastern province of Kunduz. The Afghan Defense Ministry said Saturday's attack was carried out.

The Kunduz provincial government says at least 11 civilians have been killed in multiple airstrikes. At least 10 others were injured.

The Taliban said in a statement that at least 40 civilians had been killed in the airstrikes. However, the militant group did not mention whether any of its members were injured.

The Afghan Defense Ministry did not confirm any civilian casualties in the airstrikes. However, the Afghan government is reportedly investigating the civilian casualties.

A Kunduz lawmaker said the first airstrikes were carried out at a Taliban base but that civilians were later gathered at the scene.
