The cottage industry is the bearer of the tradition and culture of Bangladesh. At one time the cottage industries of this country were exported all over the world. But all this is now a golden past. The cottage industry is under threat today due to various problems. The muslin of Dhaka had a worldwide reputation. But it has become extinct. If no action is taken now to protect the cottage industry, then all the cottage industries in Bangladesh like muslin will become extinct. However, if the right measures are taken, the country will reach the peak of development with the cottage industry. Bangladesh will be prosperous, self-sufficient and self-reliant. The nation will regain its lost heritage and glory.

What is cottage industry:

In Bangladesh, cottage industries are generally run in a very family environment with little capital, readily available raw materials and a small number of workers. The meager capital of such industries is mostly provided by family members. Most of these industries do not use electricity and the production techniques are ancient. Notable cottage industries of the country are handloom weaving, pottery, bamboo and cane industry, bidi industry, casa and brass industry, conch and oyster industry etc.

Notable cottage industries of Bangladesh:

At one time the cottage industry of Bangladesh had a reputation. But due to various problems, the cottage industries are not able to survive. Nevertheless, there are still a number of cottage industries in Bangladesh. Such as:

Silk is used to make saris, sheets and garments. Silk sari is very popular in Rajshahi.

Pottery:

In different villages of Bangladesh, potters make utensils, pots, idols, toys, pitchers, vases, tubs, utensils etc. from clay. This art carries the oldest traditions and culture of the country.

Sofa sets, baskets, kula, wrappers, rugs, swings, various fishing equipment etc. are made from bamboo and cane.

Also conch, oysters, ivory and bone garlands, buttons, branches, combs, toys, etc .; Axes, knives, scissors, pots, weeders, etc. from metallic materials; Ropes, rugs, rugs, brushes, etc. from coconut husks; Production of khaddar cloth, sheets, ready-made garments by spinning yarn; From raw jute to rope, sika, bag various items of furnishings; Salt making from salt water, making small household goods in leather, book binding, oil grinding, dheki, making sweet yoghurt and ghee are some of the potential cottage industries in Bangladesh.

The cottage industry has a tradition of Bangladesh. But due to lack of proper importance, some traditional cottage industries have been lost. The importance of cottage industry in the current socio-economic context of Bangladesh is immense. It is possible to achieve self-reliance in the cottage industry through self-employment. So we should take advantage of our labor and talent by taking initiative for self-employment through cottage industry.
