Why Powder Coating Is Considered As The Best Form Finishing

Powder coating is a wet painting alternative for automobiles and other metallic surfaces. It is the technique of applying to a surface a coating of a carefully processed solid pigment in the form of a dry powder. Heat is then added to the surface, causing a chemical reaction to occur as the temperature rises. Consequent to the chemical reaction, the powder melts, and re-solidifies into a single solid surface that matches the contours of the item that is being coated. Powder coating has more advantages over wet painting as it is cheaper, more ecologically friendly, and creates a much more durable surface that is resistant to scratch.

Before being coated, the material to be covered must be clean and free of dirt, grease, or oil. It is then connected to a small electrode, giving off a mild positive electrical charge. The spraying mechanism, which is like a paint gun, is referred to as Corona Gun. It is an uncomplicated air-powered device with a hopper consisting of powdered pigment in the form of a thermoset polymer.

When the powder is fired out of the nozzle, the Corona Gun gives off a mild negative electrical charge. This guarantees that the charges of the powder and the material are opposing. These opposing charges will inherently attract each other, causing the powder to cling to the surface instantly upon contact. The powder-coated item is then moved over to a huge commercial powder coating oven.

It is secured within the oven, ensuring that the winch chain electrode are removed before baking. The powder coating is then baked at 400°F for 10 minutes, and during this period, the thermoset polymer goes through a molecular change. Moreover, the powder coating changes at the molecular level, forming molecular bonds with every surrounding particle to create a flawless shell around the material.

As the polymer heats up, a portion of it burns, although this is seldom visible and produces no detectable gas or smoke. The burning process lowers the number of powder particles, leaving a little amount of carbon behind. The leftover particles establish bonds with the excess carbon and create a lattice-like structure with one another. The shell is allowed to cool for a few minutes before being removed.
