This newsagent went bankrupt. People don't buy newspapers or magazines there anymore because they have to buy mainly overpriced food. When someone owned a tobacconist's shop, it was said that he was a rich person. That is not the case today. Instead of newspapers and magazines, he should sell something else. For example fruits and vegetables. This small shop stands next to a large hospital.

yes. he could have sell something else aside from newspapers. since the beginning of 21st century it is said that in few years. newspaper is just a thing of the past because of social media. people go get there news from this sites. maybe he could add on cigarettes, breads, candies, and others to keep the business going.
