Sanaa is the legal capital and largest city but Aden is the provincial capital.

In the past, southern Yemen was a socialist country and northern Yemen was a one-party Islamic state under a military junta. Both were members of the United Nations, but in 1990 two separate states merged to form the Republic of Yemen. Ali Abdullah Saleh has become the head of state from northern Yemen and Ali Selim has become the head of government from southern Yemen. Ali Abdullah Saleh was overthrown by the Yemeni revolution when the Arab Spring began and was later executed.
