Begum Rokeyasakhawat is a unique female personality as a renowned Bengali writer and social reformer of the nineteenth century. Rokeya was born in 1807 in the village of Pairabandar in Rangpur district. According to Muslim society, Rokeya and her sisters were not sent to study outside, but were taught Arabic and Urdu at home. Ibrahim Saber, the elder brother of Taberoca, was a modern thinker. He secretly taught Rokeya Okrimunnesa Bengali and English at home. Rokeya's thirst for knowledge was immense. In the middle of the night, when everyone was asleep, he quietly left the bed and learned English and Bengali from his elder brother by candlelight. Her husband was a free-spirited man. He encouraged Rokeya to write and set aside money to build a school. Rokeya started studying literature. He entered the literary world in 1902 with a Bengali story called Pipasa. Sakhawat Hossain died in 1909. Five months later, Rokeya established a girls 'school called Sakhawat Memorial Girls' School in Bhagalpur. In 1910, he closed his school and moved to Calcutta. Here, on 15 March 1911, he reopened the Tinsakhawat Memorial Girls' School. Initially there were 6 students. Within four years, it had risen to 74. It became a high school in the mid-1930s. Organizational Activities Rokeya kept herself busy in organizational and social activities till the last day of her life besides running school and literature. In 1918, she founded Islam in Khawatin, an organization of Muslim Bengali women. He spoke at various meetings. In 1926 she presided over the Bengal Conference on Women's Education held in Calcutta. Her most notable work is Sultana's Dream. It is considered a milestone in feminist literature around the world. His other books are Padmarag, Abrodhabasini, Matichur. Through her essays, stories and novels, she argues for the need for women's education and for gender equality. Begum Rokeya died on 9 December 1932.
