This heartbreaking picture was taken in 1945 after the nuclear bombing of Nagasaki, Japan. In the picture, the boy is standing on the back of the body of his younger brother who died during the explosion. Where the boy was standing was a temporary cemetery outside the city where funerals were being arranged for all those who had died in the blast. The boy was standing there so that his brother could be buried.
From the diary of photographer Joe O'Donnell,
"I saw a ten-year-old boy walking. The boy had a baby on his back. It was very common for us then because kids used to play with their little brothers and sisters on their backs. But this boy was different from the other kids. I realized that he had no shoes on his feet, his face was numb and serious, the baby on his back was so sleepy that his head was tilted back a little, the boy stood there with his brother for five or ten minutes, and some men in white masks approached him. And the boy quietly untied the rope and gave the baby to them. Just then I realized that the baby on the boy's back was dead. Towards the fire. He bit his lower lip so hard that he started bleeding from the lip. The heat of the fire subsided for a while like sunset. The boy turned his eyes away from the fire and then walked away in silence. "
The movie Grave Of The Fireflies is based on this incident.
