Important discovery in the fight against pancreatic cancer: identified bacteria that can help cure the disease

Bacteria discovered to promote recovery from pancreatic cancer have been discovered: it is the very elements present in the cancer that are able to stimulate the immune system to fight the disease. This was revealed by research published in the journal Celland conducted at the University of Texas Center for Cancer Research.

Important Role

This opens up an important hope for a very complex pathology and whose recovery is always complex if we consider the fact that only 9% of patients survive 5 years after diagnosis. In recent years there has been a succession of studies that demonstrate the role of the microbiome, ie the set of bacteria that live in the organism, in stimulating or hindering the growth of tumors, not just those in the digestive tract. The effectiveness of many treatments currently in use, such as immunotherapy, is also affected by the microbiome.

What is pancreatic cancer?

The pancreas is a 6-inch-long organ located in the abdomen behind the abdomen, near the gall bladder. It contains glands that make pancreatic juice, hormones, and insulin.Cancer in the pancreas can affect either the endocrine or exocrine glands.

Exocrine glands produce:-

Exocrine glands produce juices or enzymes, which enter the intestines and help to digest fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. They make up most of the pancreas.

Endocrine glands:-

The endocrine glands are small groups of cells known as islets of Langerhans. They release the hormones insulin and glucagon into the bloodstream. There, they manage blood sugar levels. When they are not functioning properly, the result is often diabetes.

Study and Resaerch

Considering this knowledge, the researchers decided to analyze the role of bacteria in pancreatic cancer. To do this they compared the tumor microbiome of 22 patients who survived 10 years after diagnosis and that of 21 patients with lowsurvival, discovering that the microbiome of the former is rich in species such as Pseudoxanthomonas, Saccharropolyspora, Streptomyces. and Bacillus Clausii, capable of stimulating a family of immune cells, the T lymphocytes, to fight the tumor.

Researcher’s Reslt

The researchers confirmed the result on a second group of patients, demonstrating that they could even predict the prognosis of each based on the composition of the tumor microbiota. The next step was to transplant the 'active' bacteria into the digestive tract of mice with pancreatic cancer, achieving decidedly positive results.
