Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, husband of British Queen Elizabeth II, has died. He was 99 years old. Buckingham Palace said in a statement on Friday.

According to the BBC, Prince Philip married Queen Elizabeth II in 1947. Five years later, Elizabeth II ascended the British throne.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement: "It is with great sadness that we learn that the Queen (Elizabeth II), the Duke of Edinburgh, has announced the death of her beloved husband, Prince Philip. Prince Philip died this morning (Friday) at Windsor Castle.

The cause of Prince Philip's death was not immediately known.

Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II have four children and eight grandchildren.

They have 10 grandchildren. The couple's first child, Prince Charles of Wales, was born in 1948. Her sister, Princess Royal Princess Ann, was born in 1950. Prince Andrew, Duke of York, was born in 1960. Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, the fourth child of Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II, was born in 1964.

Prince Philip was born on June 10, 1921, on the Greek island of Corfu. His father was Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, the youngest son of King George I of Helens. And Prince Philip's mother, Princess Alice, was the daughter of Lord Louis Mountbatten. Princess Alice is the granddaughter of British Queen Victoria.
