* Surely prayer forbids wrongdoing and indecency: *

* (Mas'ala-Masa'il of Prayer) *

Allama Alusi (Rah :) said ---

* Humiliation of humiliation with fear and tranquility of the joints. *

* Meaning: * ‘Khushu’ is to express the ultimate humility with the fear of the heart and the stability of the limbs. * [Ruhul Maani 9/265] *

The eminent commentator Hafiz Ibn Kathir (Rah :) said that he had the wealth of Khushu-Khuzur in Salat, who keeps his heart away from everything and keeps it focused only in Salat. * [Tafsir Ibn Katheer 3/295] *

It is only when one prays with such happiness that the prayer cools his eyes and causes peace of mind. As the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said in a hadeeth:

* جُعِلَتْ قُرّةُ عَيْنِي فِي الصّلاةِ. *

* Meaning: * The coolness of my eyes has been given in the prayer. * [Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 12293; Sunan Nasai, Hadith 9340] *

In another hadith, addressing Hazrat Belal (may Allah be pleased with him), he said ---

* O Bilal! قَقِمِ الصَّلاَةَ وَأَرِحْنَا بِهَا. *

* Meaning: * Give me peace by arranging Salat, O Belal !. * [Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 4975] *

This is how a believer should feel about prayer. Salat is a safe haven for him, a source of peace of mind. On the other hand, the prayer is very difficult for the hypocrites and those who do not follow the prayers. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

* وَ اِِنَّهَا لَكَبِيْرَةٌ ِلَّا عَلَى الْخَشِعِينَ. *

* Translation: * Salat must be difficult. But khushu-khuzu (meaning meditation and humility) is not for the followers. * [Surat al-Baqara: 45] *

In another verse Irshad has spoken about the character of hypocrites ---

* وَ اِِذَا قَامُوْۤا لَِلَى الصَٰلاَةِ قَامُو كا كُسَالَى يُرَآؤُونَ النَّاسَ وَلَا يَذْكُرُونَ اللََهَ ِّلَ قا قَلِيْلاً.

* Translation: * (Surely the hypocrites) when they stand in prayer, they stand lazily. They show people, and they remember little of God. * [Surah An-Nisa ': 142] *

So the quality of a believer in prayer is khushu-khuzu. On the other hand, laziness without khushu-khuzu is a characteristic of a hypocrite. And it is the prayer of Khushu-Khuzoo that keeps the worshiper away from all unrighteousness and obscenity.

In fact, the prayer of a believer cannot be without Khushu-Khuzu; Because he is standing before the great Lord. Can't the body and mind be humbled by standing in front of him? Can a believer stand before God and concentrate on anything other than God? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) * reminded us in a wonderful way ---

* حِنَّ حَحَدَكُمْ ذِذَا قَامَ يُصَلِّي إِنّمَا يَقُومُ يُنَاجِي رَبّهُ فَلْيَنْظُرْ كَيْفَ يُنَاجِيهِ. *

* Meaning: * When one of you is standing in prayer, he talks to his Lord in private. So he should pay close attention to how he is talking. * [Mustadrake Hakem, Hadith 71; Sahih Ibn Khuzaima, Hadith 484] *

Hadrat Sa'd bin Umrah (may Allah be pleased with him) went to advise a man and said ---

* صَلِّ صَلَاةَ مُوَدِّعٍ. *

* Meaning: * When you perform the prayer, perform it as if it is the last prayer of your life. * [Almuzamul Kabir, Tabarani, Narration 5459; Alishaba, Ibn Hazar 3/60; Mazmauz Yawaid, Haychami 10/237, Narration 1839] *

A principle of all acts of worship has been described in the famous hadith 'Jibreel in Hadith'. It reveals the final form of Khushu-Khuzur-

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

* Meaning: * Ihsan is to worship Allah as if you are looking at Him. And even if you don't see him, he (of course) sees you. * [Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 50] *

The main word of this hadith is 'Khushu'. So the point is that in order to achieve the ultimate benefit of prayer, we must be diligent in prayer. Khushu-khuzu prayer is what keeps the believer away from all injustice, misdeeds and obscenity.
