Gardening and taking care of plants has become a new hobby during this pandemic. Not just taking care of ornamental plants or flowers, today many people are starting to plant fruit trees in their yards. Unlike ornamental plants, planting fruit trees takes a long time. Especially if we want to feel the harvest.

Unlike in the past, which used to grow plants through seeds, today we are familiar with the grafting method. As is familiar, grafting is an artificial vegetative propagation, in short, multiplying plants that have the same qualities as the parent. There are various benefits of grafting that we can feel, one of which is the speed of plants to grow and bear fruit. There are various methods and methods of grafting that can be used for both trees and flowers. Well, for those of you who are interested in trying, here is how to transplant plants along with examples of pictures.

The conventional way of grafting is by using the graft medium wrapped in plastic. This method is commonly used by farmers

In contrast to seeds, the results of the grafting fall into the category of mature seeds so that they flower or bear fruit more quickly. To get maximum quality, grafting is usually done on the plus trees that have been selected. The following are conventional grafting methods and pictures that are often used by farmers:

Tools and Materials:

  • Mos graft or compost

  • Black polybag plastic

  • String of raffia

  • Root growth regulator

  • Insecticide

  • Label ribbon

  • Permanent marker

  • Grafting knife

  • Machete

  • Whipsaw

  • Stationary

  • Scissors cuttings

Grafting steps:

* Choose a tree branch that is healthy, strong and woody.

*To find out, tree branches usually have a diameter of 0.5-2 cm. The color of the bark of the branches is light brown or brownish green. Depends on the type of plant.

* Cut the branches in a circular manner and made extending downwards along 3-5 cm.

* Bark branches until the mucus is clearly visible.

*Clean the mucus to dry and grease the stems with growth hormone (vitamins).

* Attach media in the form of circular plastic with rope or raffia. Make sure to cover all the incisions that have been made.

* Treat grafts by watering every day. Make sure that the graft does not dry out.

*Successful grafts will produce roots and fill the media.

*From the roots, the graft will produce leaves. If it is like this, the graft can be separated from the parent.

* Cut the graft results using scissors or a saw on the graft bond.

*To avoid evaporation, cut a few leaves from the graft.

* Save the grafted seeds in polybags filled with soil.

*Once large enough, transfer the seeds to the garden and let them grow until they flower and bear fruit.

Grafting in a conventional way is usually applied to grafting mango, orange, or guava trees.

In addition to using a grafting moss or compost, coconut fiber can also be used as a graft medium. Here are the steps

Next there is a grafting technique with coconut fiber. Basically, the tools and materials used are the same as for grafting using plastic. It's just that now we use coconut fiber as the medium. The following are the steps that you should pay attention to for grafting with coconut fiber:

* Peel the coconut husk and separate it from the hard outer skin. We only use the soft fibers without the skin.

* Soak coconut husks in water for 1 week to soften and easily separate. Soaking is also useful for removing coconut substances that can inhibit graft growth.

* If you have, dry the coconut coir and separate it from the fibers. You can also cut the coir into smaller pieces.

*Put the cleaned coconut husk in a container and add vitamins or plant hormones.

*After mixed, put the coconut husk in a plastic size of 1/4 kg for small stems and 1/2 kg for large stem diameters.

*Fill the plastic tightly with coconut fiber and tie it. This media can last one month.

*If you want to use, tear the plastic part lengthwise and attach it to the wound that has been made on the stem you want to graft.

* Adjust the position to be perfect. Treat and water the plant until it grows root fibers and leaf blades.

* If it has grown, transfer the grafted seeds to polybags. If it has started to grow, transfer it to the garden and take care of it again until it bears fruit.

Grafting with coconut fiber media is usually used for grafting longan, lime, or rambutan.

Apart from using plastic and coconut fiber as a medium, you can also transplant plants using water media using used mineral water bottles

Next is how to transplant plants with water media. This method is almost similar to conventional grafting. But there are stages that are slightly different and there are conditions that need to be followed. For grafting with water medium, make sure the mother graft is productive and more than 5 years old.

Tools and Materials:

*Cutter / sharp knife

* Clean used drinking water bottles

*Raffia rope or rope

*Clean water

*ZPT (Growth Regulatory Substance)

How to transplant plants with water media:

*Choose branches from healthy and productive plants.

* Cut the bark as long as 5 cm.

*Make incisions at a distance of 3 cm to demarcate the tree and branches.

* Prepare a container of mineral water.

*Use a transparent container to monitor the activity that occurs in future grafts.

*Fill the container with water as high as 3-4 cm.

*Put ZPT in water or apply PGR on the part that has been cut.

*Put the incision into the bottle container until it is submerged as high as 1 cm.

* Tie the mineral water container to the stem that is being grafted so that the container does not fall.

*If the graft is successful, spots will appear on the incision.

*If it has emerged, wait for the graft to grow larger.

* If you have, transfer the seeds to the soil medium with a mixture of soil and fertilizer 1:1.

* The graft has been successful and wait for it to bear fruit.

So, those are some ways of grafting with various media. Hopefully this article can help those of you who are growing plants at home. Oh yes, in addition to fruit trees, grafting is also a method that can be used for flowers. Water, conventional, and fiber media can also be used to graft roses, aglaonema, to paper flowers.
