On September 27, with 215 points gathered, the Chinese team edged out 103 countries and regions to take first place at the 61st International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held from September 18 to 28 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Six high-school contestants on the Chinese team won five gold medals and one silver, with two achieving perfect scores of 42 and 40 respectively. The team included Li Jinmin, Han Xinmiao, Yi Jia, Liang Jingxun, Rao Rui and Yan Binwei, who were all chosen after a fierce domestic competition.

First held in 1959 in Romania, the IMO is the world championship math competition for high school students and has now expanded to over 100 countries and regions around the globe.
