Anna often wished that she could have some fun like other girls. Some of her friends, she knew, were always getting to see the newest films, eating meals in costliest restaurants and always wearing smart clothes. Danica, for instance, had a minimum of three party dresses and lots of cheongsams.
"My life is all work," Anna said to herself at some point .
It was indeed all work, because Anna's mother was dead then, also as working hard all day during a supermarket within the large town during which she lived, Anna had to seem after her father. She cooked all his meals and kept the house spotlessly clean. But she didn't want to spend all her life doing this then in the dark, when everything else was done, she was teaching herself to type and to try to shorthand. She visited classes for this within the evenings sometimes and on her time off also . One day, I will be able to get a very good job as a secretary to a crucial man, she wont to think. Then are going to be ready to I will be able to have far more money and that I will be able to send some home to my father, in order that he pays somebody else to try to to his housework for him.
So the weeks and therefore the months passed, all of them seeing Anna working harder than before. Work at the departmental store was tiring. She was fairly often on her feet all day from morning until night and sometimes, the purchasers were difficult, unpleasant and hard to please. Anna worked at the counter and sometimes, the buyers were never satisfied. One piece of meat would be too fat, another too lean and other people grumbled such a lot, if they might not have precisely the right join of pork. Anna didn't like this job in the least and if she had to figure during a store, she would have preferred a chemist's or a sensible ladies' gown shop. However, like many working girls, she needed the cash then she had to persevere.
Work at home, too, was hard. Although, she had only herself and her father to seem after, the house, still got dirty and needed to be cleaned. The rich spiced pork dish that her father liked such a lot, took even as much trouble for 2 , as they might have finished four or for 6 people.
"It will all pass, if I exerting enough", she thought as she walked together with her shorthand book to the Commercial School, where she learnt shorthand and typing. The room was busy as she entered it. Other girls and boys were already seated behind the typewriters which were all new, since the varsity had barely opened. The pupils were putting long pieces of white papers into the machines and setting the spaces and margins. Soon the faucet, tap, tap, of the keys might be heard because the class began its evening's work. Anna became absorbed in hers. She was very tired, but she tried her best to concentrate, looking all the time at the copy lying beside her typewriter.
"You have a good touch", said a voice.
"I have great hopes for you in the Diploma examination next week". She searched to seek out the Principal of the varsity standing by her desk. This was indeed as honor.
"Your shorthand speeds are good too", went on the Principal.
"Try hard in your examination then ready to I will be able to assist you to hunt out employment . Remember to practice your shorthand at home. If you've got nobody to dictate to you, the voices on the radio are often used instead." He walked to subsequent desk leaving Anna to her work and wondering just what time she could find to suit in any longer practice.
The Principal was right in fact, as they typically are and Anna obtained her Diploma with excellent marks. Now, she is that the private Secretary to the Principal himself and features a pleasant job with an honest salary. She helps her father to buy a lady to seem after them, and although she remains very industrious, she now has time for pleasure and recreation. She worked hard to realize the congenial life she leads now, because at an early age, she was wise enough to understand that without pain there can never be any gain.
