Fairy Tail is an anime whether you hate it or like it. It has qualities that you might like, but there is also that you might find annoying. And after the series ended when they finally defeated Zeref and Acnologia, the sequel series entitled Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest was announced. But what makes this sequel so great that many people talk about it? And is it worth the hype?
First, let's talk about what makes Fairy Tail excellent or bad and helps us decides whether Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest is a good sequel or not. To allow you know, I've already read the manga, so I have learned what will happen, but for those who only watch anime, I will make sure not to spoil important info.
Fairy Tail has an excellent story. This might be the only reason why I still follow this series. Every character has a solid back story and knowing there are many important characters in this series. It's amazing how they still make it connect with each other. Another thing that I also like about Fairy Tail is the excellent character design. We can't deny that. But this is where the opposing side entered. It has an insane amount of fan service. Characters are just getting naked out of nowhere, and it's obvious it is meant to please the fans. The power of friendship thing is also annoying that you want to cringe every time they talk about it. And lastly, the cliche rises of power levels. Fairy Tail always revolve around characters who got defeated first, and you can see the vast differences in their powers, but after few minutes, they just overpowered them like some ants. You might notice this when they defeated Zeref and Acnologia, who lived and trained for hundreds of year's but were defeated by a 16 years old boy who believes in the power of friendship.
So what about Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest? Is it the same as always, or there is something new?
All I can say is I'm not sure whether I like it or not, at least right now. The development in this sequel is very similar to Toriko, where they make a Gourmet World sequel. The story is good, but the power levels are broken. Fairy Tail now took a quest that no one ever finished for the past 100 years. Lucy, Natsu, Wendy, Erza, Gray, Carla and Happy accepted the quest despite the dangers. Their goal is to seal 5 Dragon Gods. That's right, Acnologia is not the last dragon. The other five dragons are at least as strong as Acnologia remains, and they need to seal them.
To be honest, there are many exciting things here in this sequel besides the fact that there are still dragons alive. It's fantastic to know that there are other Dragons Slayer who eat dragons to get their power. They are called Dragon Eaters. And how about the existence of the true son of Igneel, Ignia? These are the things that you need to look out for. And, of course, the epic battles.
As I said earlier, the broken power levels in the story might be an issue. The sudden change in strength is absurd that you might never know how the hell did he get strong like that all of the sudden? And still, there is the "Power of Friendship". I don't know about you guys, but It isn't enjoyable for me. Maybe the author wants to troll us, but men, it's not funny anymore. Yes, it's shounen but can they minimise this kind of trend? Fairy Tail might be a great anime if they just set this " Power of Friendship" thing aside.
Overall, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest is an exciting project. It's just a matter of mindset whether you will accept the negative side of this series. It's good that the story is still good as usual, but the power levels and power of friendship are still annoying for me. So I think it's still worth it (for now). I still enjoy the manga, especially the story. There is still a lot more to expand, and things are getting more intriguing.
I'm looking forward to the anime adaptation.
