Thursday is for throwback
Every Thursday I will try to bring some flash back to my past events. Today I will talk about an interdepartmental competition that I participated in during my undergraduate days.
Second semester of each academic session hosts a lot of activities in which sport is a core. My department was unable to qualify out of the group stage and from that moment we have promised to bring glory days to our department. In lieu of that we started our training two weeks before the competition. My department president provides everything needed for the training and matches for us. Our staff adviser is ready to give it all in the financial aspect.
In the previous competition we played the role we felt like playing but it later changed, we played as per our performance in training. The training was lively and you will surely see the thirst for success in our actions.
For the first week of competition we have twelve players and no Goalkeeper, we searched from 100 level students to 300 level students we could not get one. Luckily for us when God decided to answer our prayer, a fresh student in 100 level joined the training section as a goalie two days to the competition, that moment everybody smile and laugh and we all shouted "our headache is over"
We are fully prepared, we have exerted pressure on other departmental teams, they don't fear our individual performance but they are scared of the team spirit and determination.
We played three matches at group stage, we won two and drew one and topped the group. The last match that we played was against the defending champion, our performance in the group stage raised fear among other departments, they don't wish to face us. We played extensively well and we were able to reach the final.
We are aware that playing in the final is like fighting a battle, it will be do or die.
On the final match day, we have 75% of the spectators in our support, our opponent has been dominating for the past four years and students from other departments wish us success. Throughout first half it was goalless and both team played well. At the beginning of second half of the final match, they score and we are 1-0 down, luckily for us we come back and score a brace, it was after our second goal that we can jubilate while we are jubilating the referee blow to signal for the other team to play on, it was then that we realise the referee was against us. They later equalise and we lose at the penalty play off with 5-3 against us in penalty. We are sad because it will be difficult for us to have the chance to make it to that level again.
Thanks for reading through 😘
