The origin of the word "Dhaka" is from the name Dhaka + Ishwari, the name of the Dhakeswari temple built by Raja Ballal Sen. Dhaka ( English : Dhaka ; formerly known as Dacca ) is one of the oldest cities in Bangladesh and is now the capital of Bangladesh. It is known from various history books that people started living in Dhaka from the 8th century AD. Bikrampur was the capital of the Sena near Dhaka. Recently, the palace of Ballal Sen has been found from the village "Ballal Bari" in Bikrampur. In the later period of Sen, Dhaka came under Turkish and Afghan rule. At this time Dhaka was ruled by the rulers appointed by the Delhi Sultanate. The Mughals first set foot in Dhaka in 1608. In 1810 Dhaka was renamed Jahangir Nagar. After the death of Emperor Aurangzeb, the capital was shifted from Dhaka to Murshidabad in the early eighteenth century when the Mughal Empire was weakening. In the post-Mughal period, Dhaka was under British rule for about 190 years. Later in 1947, Dhaka became part of Pakistan as the capital of East Bengal. On 23 March 1956, Dhaka was given the status of the capital of East Pakistan. According to the 1972 constitution, Dhaka was declared as the capital of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
