The Bangla language movement was a cultural and political movement that took place in the then East Bengal (present day Bangladesh ) from 1947 to 1956 . Protecting the fundamental rights of the Bengali language surrounding caused by the movement of the then Dominion of Pakistan , one of the state as reflected ganadabira establishment. Although the movement reached its climax on February 21, 1952, in fact its seeds were planted long ago, on the other hand, its response and results were far-reaching.
In 1947, the two-nation theory on the basis of British India divided Pakistan Dominion and Dominion of India , the two independent states emerged. Pakistan had two parts: East Bengal (renamed East Pakistan in 1955 ) and West Pakistan . There are many fundamental cultural, geographical and linguistic differences between the two parts of Pakistan, which are more than two thousand kilometers apart. In 1947, the government of the Kingdom of Pakistan declared that UrduWill be the only state language of Pakistan. In the context of this announcement, deep resentment arose among the Bengali-speaking common people in East Bengal and caused a backlash. In fact, the Bengali-speaking people of East Bengal could not accept this sudden and unjust decision and were not mentally ready at all. As a result, the movement for the equal status of the Bengali language in East Bengal quickly gained momentum. To suppress the movement, the police issued section 144 declaring processions, rallies, etc. illegal and prohibited in Dhaka city.Disobeying this order on 21 February 1952 (8 Falgun 1356), a large number of students of Dhaka University and some progressive political activists started a protest procession. The procession to the Dhaka Medical College and came close to the police opened fire on protesters on the ground of 144 for contempt. Commercial Press, the owner's son was shot dead Badamtali Rafiq [1] , parliamentary party resigned the same day. The Shaheed Minar was built overnight by the students at the Medical College Hostel premises to commemorate the martyrs of the language movement. Salam , MA. A. The shock of this tragic incident caused great anger in the whole of East Bengal. Protests erupted across the country in protest of the February 21 student killings. On 22nd and 23rd February, students , workers, writers, intellectuals, teachers and the general public went on a full -scale strike and violated Section 144 by holding rallies. Shafiur Rahman Shafiq, rickshaw puller Awal and a teenager were martyred in the police firing on 22 February . On 23 February, the police also tortured the students and the procession in Fulbaria. The Muslim League in protest of this shameless, brutal, police attack , which was inaugurated on 24 February by Shaheed Shafiur Rahman's father. Mr. Abul Kalam Shamsuddin, Editor of Dainik Azad officially inaugurated the Shaheed Minar on 26 February .
In the face of growing mass movement, the central government of Pakistan was finally forced to bow down and on 7 May 1954, Bengali was adopted as one of the state languages in the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan. When the first constitution of Pakistan was enacted in 1956, Article 214 mentioned Bengali and Urdu as the state languages of Pakistan. When Bangladesh became independent in 1971, Bengali was introduced as the only state language. To ensure the use of Bengali at all levels, the Government of Bangladesh enacted the Bengali Language Act in 1986 . [4] International Mother Language Day on February 21, 1999, in honor of the UNESCO Bangla language movement, human language and cultural rights.As which is celebrated annually at the global level with deep reverence and due dignity.
