The outcast chapter 1
She walks swiftly as she breathes heavily. This is the third time in this week that she had been sent home from school. This is not good, she thinks inwardly as she continues to walk so fast. She is angry,people take her for granted. She doesn't like it. She has to show them that she is up and doing . Earlier on, Bolu, the fat girl who is known to be the class bully had called her a bastard because she refused to share her snacks with her. "This Bolu, I will teach her lesson one of these days", she says as she continues walking briskly. She isn't at fault,she only tried raising her hand and Bolu raised false alarm which drew their teacher's attention. The teacher reported this case to the principal,Bolu had lied against her for the third time in a week ,no one will believe her. She is tired of being like this,"taken for granted". She finally gets home. She meets her mom washing clothes outside their bungalow. "Tola, what are you doing home at this time? ,you this child ehn".
Tola stands as her mom continues raining abuses on her. She stands there in deep thoughts .
Tolani Omotayo, being the only girl amongst boys, isn't really even seen as one. She behaves and dresses like a boy. She is seen as a mistake and not really given much attention to as she came when the mother had given up on bearing more children. A slim average height dark girl, she is the carbon copy of her beautiful mom who sometimes doesn't want to see her face as Tola was a mistake to her.
Am I not talking to you ? You this girl won't kill me. Why are you like this ehn? Mama Tunde, Tola's mother says as she makes attempt to throw her footwear at Tola. Tola stutters and is breathing heavily, "m.....moo...mommy, I am s...so..so sorry.
" Sorry, my foot ", Mama Tunde says vehemently. She stands with her hands akimbo. She is a plumpy woman of forty years of age,dark and also of average height. She have two moles on her face and plump lips. She is seen as a very pretty woman but isn't a good mother to Tola as she sees Tola as a disgrace and a mistake.
"Kneel down and close your eyes. "There would be no food for you. You give me headache ", Mama Tunde continues.Tola kneels after dropping her school bag at the veranda." I wonder why mother hates me so much, Tola wonders as tears rolls down her slim cheeks. The mom enters the apartment to get the cane. "Whai whai",it lands on Tola's back before she stands and starts to run around the Omotayo's compound. This is getting too much for Tola. The beatings and nagging is too much to bear. Mama Tunde stops and goes back to her washing. "Go and wash those plates in the kitchen and arrange that house for me", Mama Tunde says . Tolu enters as fast as she could to avoid any beating. She is really tired and she feels no one can save her.
