Religious Beliefs : A number of clay figurines of women of the New Stone Age have been found. These are the images of 'Mother Goddesses'. With the discovery of agriculture people worshipped the land as 'mother' as they believed that this would increase the production of crops. Besides, for the facilities of cultivation the natural forces like the sun, rain, etc. also were worshipped.
(In the Neolithic period there is also the evidence of people's belief in totems. A totem may be described as the image of an animal or a tree used as a symbol of the group of families living together (clan). Failure of the people to understand the process of nature led them to believe that animals and men had the same ancestor. The idea of totem was also linked up with the danger of some catastrophe that would destroy crops, livestock and game. Thus the people chose animals and trees to be their totems, their ancestors and protectors.)
