In 1893 Swami Vivekananda went to Chicago to attend the Parliament of Religions there. At this Parliament were representatives of the world's great religions. They came from many

different countries. Vivekananda spoke about Hinduism, which he called the mother of religions'. The Americans and others who attended the Parliament learnt from him about the truths which a man knows only by self-realization. They were very much impressed by him and looked upon him as a 'man of authority'.

When the Parliament was over, Vivekananda lectured and taught in many parts of America. In 1895 he went to London at the invitation of some English friends. He gave many lectures there, and in a few days became well known as the 'Hindu Yogi'.
