Friends Did you know?
Tipitaka or Tripitaka.these are most important and mostly used terms in Buddhism.
Tipitaka (Tripitaka) is the principal text of Buddhism. Suttapitaka,
Vinaypitaka and Abhidhammapitaka together constitute the Tipitak.
In Pali language the word pitak means 'basket'. These three
compilations have been compared to three baskets. Suttapitaka is a
collection of the sermons given by Gautama Buddha to his principlal
disciples. Vinaypitaka contains the code of conduct meant for Buddhist
monks. Abhidhammapitaka discusses the main tenets of Gautama
Buddha. All these were composed in Pali language.
The first Buddhist council took place in Rajagriha after the death of
Buddha. It is believed that the Tripitak collections were composed
there. The story is that the death of Gautama Buddha left his disciples
in deep distress. Then one of his disciples named Subhadra said, now
we can follow our individual wishes and we do not have to abide by
Buddha's wish. Mahakashyap was yet another disciple of Buddha.
Listening to Subhadra's words, he felt that it was imperative to compile
the principles of Buddhist religion. Accordingly he convened a council
in Rajagriha, where the first two Pitakas were compiled.
