Introduction of Agriculture : Food-Producing Man : How man came to know the art of cultivation is still a mystery.Beginning of agriculture Possibly it is the women who first started cultivation (When men used to go out for hunting the women would gather wild plants and fruits from the forest
They for the first time found that the seeds falling on the bare soil grew up into plants from which they could again get seeds. Thus started agriculture. 7 5 Man how began to produce his own food. He was no longer dependent on nature for food. He was no longer compelled to move from one place to another in search of food. He was able
to produce sufficient food even in one plot of land. In this way in the New Stone Age man was no longer a 'food-gatherer', but became a 'food-producer'.
In the Indian sub-continent, the people of Mehrgarh became food-producer from mere food-gatherer when they learnt the art of growing food. This was possible when they spread from the hill-top to the plains. That agriculture was known to the people of Mehrgarh is provided by the fact that the bones of the domesticated animals like goat, sheep and cows have been unearthed in plenty.
