Occupations : Agriculture and stock-breeding were the main occupations of most of the Sumerians. Weaving, smithy, pottery, etc. were, however, not unknown to the people of Sumer. A large number of people were engaged in weaving. It was perhaps the Sumerian people who used the potter's wheel first. Next to weaving, pottery was the most popular industry in Sumer, and many people earned their livelihood by making pots, vessels, etc. Simple implements, utensils and ornaments made of different metals have been unearthed. The shapes and patterns of these articles clearly testify to the fact that the metal workers of Sumer had developed very high technical knowledge and skill.
