Reasons for the Growth of the River Valley Civilisations :
(i) Various factors were responsible for the growth of rivervalley civilisations. With the invention of the method of cultivation there was a great change in the way of life of man. He now was no longer dependent on hunting or gathering fruits and roots from the forest. He now produced food by agriculture. It was, therefore, necessary for him to live in a fixed place, for, it would be months before he could expect to reap the harvest after sowing.
(ii) Apart from this, land had to be prepared with much labour before sowing. Again agriculture needed water and every place would not be suitable for it. People, therefore, began to settle down in places suitable for agriculture, and often by the side of the rivers.
(iii) In course of time man discovered other uses of rivers.
