The land of sumer was full of marshes. So,It was water-logged. The Sumerians drained out the water and made the area fit for cultivation.Sumer had a clay soil and because of the heavy rainfall in winter the ground was covered with thick layer of mud. Moreover, the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers brought down great quantity of fertile mud from the Armenian mountains where the two rivers rise. All this increased the fertility of the soil of Sumer and rich harvests grew there.
In the fertile soil of Sumer wheat and barley grew in large quantity. Historical documents show that average yield on a field of barley was approximately eighty-six times the sowing. Naturally, the farmers here could easily produce a surplus above their domestic need. Besides, the settlements were surrounded by date-palms. The Sumerians made various uses of date-palms—to make flour, honey and wine, the fibre of the palm-tree to make baskets, ropes, etc. The palm was so important in the life of the Sumerians that they called it the 'tree of life'.
