Playing games like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) can actually have a positive impact on performance at the office.
So at least according to a study from Brigham Young University (BYU). According to the study, collaborative games like Fortnite and PUBG can increase cooperation and productivity.
In detail, the study indicates that playing games played together with PUBG, Fortnite, or Halo 4 for just 45 minutes can increase work productivity by up to 20 percent.
"Seeing such a big jump, especially with the duration of their play, is quite surprising," said Greg Anderson, a professor from BYU who also worked on the study, as quoted by detikINET from TheInquiret.net.
"Companies have spent thousands of dollars on team building activities and I'm now thinking, it's better to just buy an Xbox," he said.
The research involved 352 people who were recruited and then arranged into 80 random teams. The goal is to ensure that no one in a team knows each other professionally, or has worked together, before.
The teams were tested before and after participating in the test in a variety of competitive activities with a collaborative atmosphere, including playing video games. Participants are also rewarded with money if they win.
According to Mark Keith, one of the researchers who is also a teaching staff at BYU, stated that video games can be an alternative to team building activities that are usually carried out by companies.
The researchers claim that test takers do not need to be genuinely into gaming to see the positive effects of "team gaming". The newbie in this test is also said to be able to build communication and an atmosphere of cooperation quickly.
Basically video games like Fortnite and PUBG, especially when played together in teams of 2-4 people rather than playing alone, can test one's ability to make quick decisions and cooperate in critical situations.
