Empero's new penguin colony,

Is it really comforting?

Penguins are the birds of the ice kingdom. Although they cannot fly, they have been given the title of birds since time immemorial. There are 16 species of penguins in the world.

Recently Peter T. A British Antarctic Survey research team led by Fretwell has found 11 new settlements for empero penguins. Even if not, this time it has been completely confirmed.

Two of the new settlements are in the Antarctic Peninsula, three in the west of the Antarctic and six in the east.

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) research team used ESA's Sentinel-2 satellite in their research survey.

With the help of this satellite, they observed images taken in 2016, 2017 and 2019 in the vicinity of previously discovered settlements and in places where no one has searched for them. Remains. And thus found 11 new settlements.

The newly discovered settlements increased the number of penguins by about 20% of the previously known settlements and about 5% of the total emperors.

"It's exciting for us to find new settlements for penguins, but the settlements are quite small and there are about half a million penguins in total," said Fretwell, head of the BAS research team. "While this is great news for penguins, they are as endangered as other animals in the area," he said.

They live mainly in the ice region and this is where they breed. But as a result of climate change, the average temperature of the earth has risen by about 1.5 degrees Celsius. As a result, Antarctica's ice is melting massively, threatening the region's animals.

"While we want to see a glimmer of hope for these animals, this is no longer possible, but this research proves that a large proportion of their total population is under threat from climate change. The settlements include small settlements with only a few hundred penguins.

"This celebration is very short-lived because if global warming continues like this and every country's government does not control pollutants, none of them will exist by the end of this century. We may lose this species forever," he warned.
