Child labor in Bangladesh:
At that age the child was supposed to have books and pencils in his hand but instead the child is being forced to go in search of work to provide his own food. A class of greedy vested interests make all these children work by taking advantage of the weakness of poverty. Because the value of the labor of these children is very insignificant. Textiles and garments, print and embroidery, garments, leather industry, footwear and brick factories are some of the sectors in Bangladesh where child labor is most prevalent. Many children are still working in garments hiding their age. According to the US Department of Labor, Bangladesh ranks second in the world in the production of goods through the use of child labor. India is in the first place and the Philippines is in the third place.
Child labor policy
Children: There are some differences in determining the age of a child in different countries due to differences in socio-economic status, differences in culture and values, differences in nature and environment. Again in the same country there are differences in determining the age of the child due to the type of work and the work environment. For example, according to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989), all human children under the age of 18 are considered children, unless under the law applicable to children, a child is considered an adult before the age of 18. According to ILO Convention 138, a human child under the age of 15 shall be called a child but a human child under the age of 18 shall be called a child in hazardous work. According to the Bangladesh Labor Act 2006, those who have not reached the age of 14 are called children.
Child labor
All workers employed below the age prescribed by customary law are child laborers. According to the consensus of experts, child labor is physically, mentally and morally detrimental to the child in all areas, both institutional and non-institutional.
The garment industry is a labor intensive industry. There is a lot of work pressure in the factory for lead time management in the production process. As a result, the authorities believe that the employment of child laborers in this industry will not be conducive to the mental development of the child, which is applicable to all children irrespective of race, religion and caste.
For this, at the initial stage of the recruitment process, the officers of the Human Resources Department through the national identity card and birth registration of the candidates coming for the job.
After the selection, the age of the candidate is determined by the registered physician to ensure the age of the candidate.
In some cases the authorities accept the test pass certificate to prove the age of the candidate.
