Bangabandhu Bridge or Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge or Jamuna Bridge is a road and railway bridge located on the Jamuna river in Bangladesh. With a length of 4.8 km, it is the second longest bridge in Bangladesh. Its construction was completed in 1997. It connects Bhunapur (Bhuapur) on the east bank of the river Jamuna and Sirajganj on the west bank. It is the 11th longest bridge in the world and the 6th longest in South Asia. The Jamuna is the largest of the three major rivers in Bangladesh and the fifth largest in the world in terms of volume of flowing water. The bridge establishes a strategic link between the eastern and western parts of Bangladesh.
The first initiative to build the Jamuna Bridge was taken in 1949. Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani was the first to take this initiative. But then it was not possible to implement it. Work began on October 15, 1994, and was opened to traffic on June 23, 1997.
