What Freedom means to me.

While I was growing up, I have always wanted to have my freedom and be on my own but I think I was all wrong. My parents are someone who would go any length to discipline us in their own way. As their children, we dare not talk to any guy or move with any of them. We were always locked up in the house and a strict warning would be given to us. You dare not go against their rules, they are so strict and hard on us, but at the same time, we were loved and they play with us everytime they had the chance. I have always thought of running away from them just to gain my own freedom, but I was so young to realize I am playing with suffering for myself.

During secondary days, we were taught what freedom means especially in the Constitution of Nigeria.

Freedom means "the act to do things on your own and be given the right to do whatever you want". Freedom to life, health, vote and be voted for, Education, etc are all what we were taught in school as rights to freedom but why then are they hard on us without allowing us to breathe?

Like I said, I have thought of running away which I did for two days, though I was greatly punished for that. Then, when I left home, I felt how freedom was like. I could do anything I want without anyone cautioning me, I slept and feed the way I want but for how long would that take me? I thought I was being wise to carry out such step but I was wrong.

I watched a movie last night and this made me got more understanding and it goes like this

"Freedom without a responsibility becomes an anarchy".

This is very true. Anarchy means "Confusion". You can't be free without realizing you would have a lot of responsibility on you. When you plan on having your own freedom and you do not take into consideration the responsibility involve, you may get confused on the way and that can destroy your journey.

If you want to be free, then you must work for it so that you don't get to be held down on the way.

When I grew up, my mentality changed totally and I was able to understand that one cannot gain freedom if he or she isn't ready. Also there are ways you can become free and explore things the way you want.

Being an introvert, I have always tried hard to be free from struggles and troubles around me. I have always tried hard to be free to express myself clearly without having to cut corners before I could say what is in my mind. I barely talk to my relatives especially my Aunts and I feel better when I express in writing.

I consider it more lengthy to express in writing so as to pass my message across to them because I am not always free to talk to them on phone. But I love expressing myself in writing.

Then, another thing I want to be free from is financial tussle. I come from an average family and though, we are very okay but I think I need enough to help me through.

My mind has been to work hard to earn something good for myself. "If I have money, I would treat myself to the brim" this is what I do tell myself. I want to be free to explore places and money is hindering me on that. I believe someday I would be free to make my wishes come to pass.

This is a writing challenge by @JonicaBradley titled "FREEDOM" and I really appreciate this moment to bring myself to talk about Freedom. I love been challenged as this can help me to better understand myself better especially in writing.

@princessbusayo Thank you for taking the time to write about what freedom means to you. When we are children, we want to be free to stay awake all night, eat candy all day, and play with whomever we want. When we are adults, we want the freedom to be children. To not have to work and provide. To not have to pay taxes. To just be free as a child.

Exactly. As we grow up, we want to be free but what we don't understand then was that freedom comes with responsibilities and so we must be ready to accept those responsibilities too
